Why do my teeth become discoloured?

Question:

Why do my teeth become discoloured?

Answer:

The teeth can become discoloured for many reasons. First and foremost it is normal for the teeth to develop a yellow shade with time. Teeth with dead pulpa (the nerve, being the soft tissue located in the middle of the tooth), and thereby also teeth which have had a root canal treatment, will develop a greyish shade. Teeth can also become discoloured by coating due to cigarette smoke. Consumption of tea, coffee, red wine, as well as other foods and drinks containing colouring agents, also cause discolouration of the teeth. Teeth whitening might be helpful in getting a whiter smile. Another more expensive alternative would be to have porcelain veneers inserted on top of the teeth.
