White Teeth

Discolouration of the teeth is a common phenomenon. Red wine, fizzy drinks, coffee, and tea are all types of beverages that discolour the teeth. Smoking is also a well-known cause of discoloured teeth, and it can even cause permanent discolouration, if this is not treated in due time.

Tooth brushing alone will not make your teeth whiter. People with discoloured teeth often brush their teeth too hard or too long, which will only cause unnecessary damage to the enamel (the surface of the teeth).

For those who have discoloured teeth and would like them to be whiter, the best solution would be teeth whitening (bleaching). For this treatment, a gel containing hydrogen peroxide is applied on the teeth, actively bleaching them. Teeth whitening can be performed at the dentist, and is also available as a off-the-shelf kit for those who would rather bleach their teeth at home.

In some cases of discoloured teeth, the condition is so bad that bleaching the teeth alone will not be enough to achieve the desired result. If this is the case, there is the option of having veneers put in, on their own or in combination with teeth whitening.

Your dentist will be able to advise you further on the option best suited for you.

Teeth Whitening with Hydrogen Peroxide

Teeth whitening in a clinic is usually carried out through a single visit at the dentist, which usually takes less than an hour. Bleeching at a clinic is safe, fast, and efficient, but more expensive than using home whitening kit.

A home bleaching kit provides a whitening tray and bleach to use at home. The whitening tray is then to be worn every day or night, usually over a period of 1 - 2 weeks. Home bleaching is cheaper than having it done at a clinic, but less effective.
