Generally on injection of Own Fat/Blood (Autologue Filler)

If you wish to enhance certain parts of the body, most often the facial features, so-called dermal filler can be injected with the purpose of adding volume to the area. There are both artificial, industrially made, and autologue fillers.

When a filler is autologue, it means that it is taken from the body itself. It is possible to use the patient's own fat, or the so-called plasma gel, which is made from the patient's own blood.

When fat is used, it is usually sucked away from the stomach or hips, using a small cannula. It is then cleaned, and in some cases centrifuged in order to make it more liquid.

When blood is used, a blood sample is taken - typically from near the elbow. The plasma of the blood, being the part that is not liquid, is extracted and mixed with some other materials to make the plasma gel.

The benefit of using this material from the patient's own body is that there is no risk of connective tissue lumps or allergic reactions, contrary to artificial fillers.

After the treatment, the treated area will be a bit swollen. A mild reddening, along with contusions (bruising) may occur.

Healing and recovery

Work may be resumed immediately after the treatment. Makeup is allowed again hours after the treatment.

Duration of the result

The autologue fillers can be defined as semi-permanent, seeing as the effect will eventually wear off, but after a certain amount of treatments the result can become permanent. It is still inconclusive how many treatments that are needed, and how often, for the result to become permanent.

ASAPS - which is the leading American society for aesthetic plastic surgery - says that plasma gel have a lasting effect of up to 3 months, after which a new treatment is needed.

Another American society claims that plasma gel can last for up to 5 months, and that in 7-10% of the cases it leaves a permanent result.

Many domestic clinics are, however, under the perception that a permanent result can be achieved after 3-5 treatments.
