Dental Jewellery

Treatment information

The insertion of dental jewellery is a safe, quick, and painless treatment, which can add an extra little sparkle to your smile.

Generally about the treatment

A Dental jewel is a tiny piece of jewellery, which can be attached to a tooth. The tendency is mostly seen in the U.S, but dental jewellery is also becoming more and more popular in Europe, among both women and men, young and old.

It's possible to purchase a kit for applying a dental jewel yourself, but dentists have advised against this, as there is a high risk of bacteria forming. The safest way is to have a dentist apply the jewel.

Suitability

Adults, as well as adolescents, are suited for this treatment, given that the tooth chosen for the jewel is healthy and has not been damaged.

The procedure

The dentist will start by buffing the surface of the tooth in the area where the jewel is to be placed. Then the area is cauterised, after which the jewel is attached using a special glue. Finally, the dentist will remove any excess glue.

The treatment is safe, painless, and only takes a few minutes.

Anaesthesia

As the treatment is free of pain there is no need for any sedatives.

Side-effects

In some cases the glue may be difficult to remove completely again, which can leave a yellow spot on the tooth. The spot can be buffed away but the buffing will also be removing part of the tooth's healthy enamel.

Dental jewellery requires a very thorough oral hygiene. If the bacteria forming around the jewel are not removed regularly, there is a risk of developing gingivitus (gum disease).

Duration of the result

A dental jewel, which has been applied properly, can last for up to several years. The jewel can also be removed or replaced just as easily as it was first applied.
