Birthmark Removal Surgery

Treatment information

Traditionally, birthmarks are removed by cutting them off (excision). The procedure is relatively uncomplicated and is performed in most places.

Generally about the treatment

Excision of a birthmark is a minor surgical operation where the unwanted birthmark is excised.

The treatment is normally done when there is suspicion of birthmark cancer. It can, however, also be done for cosmetic reasons.

Doctors generally recommend that birthmarks are always removed by. If birthmarks are removed using laser, the birthmark tissue becomes damaged, making it impossible to perform a check for signs of cancer.

The procedure

After giving a local sedative the surgeon cuts off the unwanted birthmark.

Anaesthesia

A local anaesthetic is provided for the area where the birthmark is to be excised.

Risk of complications

There is a risk of side effects from the anaesthetic used, along with bleeding, poor wound healing, a poor cosmetic result, and blood accumulation.

No form of surgery is risk free, although severe complications are very rare.
