Generally about the treatment
Most men have had thoughts regarding the size of their penis at one time or another in their life, and - to the surprise of some - the majority of men are even unhappy with their size.
Men can be divided into 2 groups. There are those who have a relatively small penis, which then enlarges by about 60 % when erect. Then there is the type of men who have a relatively large penis when flaccid, but which doesn't grow much when erect.
Most men will have a penis between the sizes of 10 and 20 centimeters (4 - 8 inches), from which the average size is 12 to 15 centimeters (4.75 - 6 inches).
It's important to note that penile lengthening surgery only increases the length of the penis in its flaccid condition. You must also be aware that the result of penile lengthening surgery varies a lot from patient to patient.
Most men will experience an increase in the length of their penis by approximately 2 centimeters (0.75 inches), whereas others may experience an increase of up to 6 centimeters (2.5 inches).
Prior to the surgery, the surgeon will give the patient an estimate of the kind of result, he may be able to achieve.
Suitability
Men over the age of 18, who've had counselling regarding their problem, and who still see the surgery as being the only solution for them.
Penile enlarging surgery is generally an operation without significant results, especially when taking into consideration the risks of damaging the appearance or function of the penis, and should only be carried out on those, who see no other solution.
The procedure
For penile lengthening surgery, the surgeon will loosen some of the ligaments in the penis, which help suspend it. This will make the penis appear longer, as it is then pulled forward from the pubic bone. After this, the surgeon will stitch everything together, often using dissolvable stitches.
In some cases the surgeon may have to perform a circumcision on the patient as well, as this can help avoid swelling of the foreskin.
The procedure usually takes 1 hour to do.
Anaesthesia
The operation is carried out under general anaesthesia.
Side-effects
Throughout the first month after the surgery, the patient may experience spontaneous and painful erections. The pains can be eased with painkillers.
Throughout the first 3 weeks, the penis will swell up significantly. The swelling can be reduced through increased bed rest during the first week after surgery.
Risk of complications
There is a risk of a change to the angle of the penis when erect. This shouldn't cause any problems during sexual activities, though.
There is a risk of loss of feeling in the penis, as well as impotence.
In some cases, the patient may experience that the length of the penis has remained the same length, as it was prior to the surgery.
There is a risk of side effects from the anaesthetic used, along with bleeding, poor wound healing, a poor cosmetic result, and blood accumulation.
No form of surgery is risk free, although severe complications are very rare.
Healing and recovery
Most patients will be able to resume work within the following week after surgery.
The patient should restrain from any strenuous activities, including sexual activities, for the first month after the surgery.
It is important to maintain a good hygiene. Showering of the area should be carried out daily, and without the use of soap.
Duration of the result
The result is permanent.
