Vaginal Tightening Surgery (Vaginoplasty)

Treatment information

Vaginal tightening surgery can help improve the sex lives of many women and can even help to prevent incontinence (involuntary urination) or women with a prolapsed pelvis (weakening in the muscles of the pelvic area).

Generally about the treatment

Most women experience a loss of tightness in their vagina after having given birth or gradually as they they older.

Although this condition is harmless, it can cause both physical and emotional discomfort, as it can affect the quality of both the woman and her partner's sex life, as well as have a negative impact on the woman's self confidence.

Incontinence is another commonly seen problem, where the woman is unable to control her urination. This condition can easily lead to a lack of self-confidence. Luckily, vaginoplasty is a relatively simple and quick form of surgery that can make a significant difference.

Suitability

Healthy and fit women over the age of 18, who have given birth, as well as women who suffer from incontinence (involuntary urination) or a prolapsed pelvis (weakening in the muscles of the pelvic area).

Women, who have given birth, must wait with having the surgery until 1 year after the birth.

The procedure

The operation can be carried out using laser or traditional surgical methods.

The surgeon will start by joining the stretched muscles at the back of the vagina together and shortening it, using dissolvable sutures (stitches). After this, any excess skin will be removed. The scars will be left on the inside and will therefore not be visible.

The surgery takes approximately 1 hour and often involves having to stay overnight.

Anaesthesia

The operation can be carried out under general anaesthesia, or under local sedation.

Risk of complications

There is a risk of side effects from the anaesthetic used, along with bleeding, poor wound healing, a poor cosmetic result, and blood accumulation.

No form of surgery is risk free, although severe complications are very rare.

Healing and recovery

Soreness as well as swelling is likely to occur after the operation. After a few days, the patient will be able to walk around without discomfort and may return to work after a few days.

It's important to avoid sexual activities throughout the first 4-6 weeks following surgery.

The final results will show after 2-3 weeks.

Duration of the result

The duration of the result of the surgery depends on the individual patient. Factors such as ageing and giving birth after having had the surgery may alter the result.
